Meticulously hand-carved of Alpine maple and hand-stained in Italy’s Grödner Tal (Val Gardena) by Dolfi®, our sculpted image of the Italian mystic and humble friar, and founder of the Franciscan order who was elevated to sainthood, beautifully captures his love for all of God’s creatures. Carved into an oval wooden border, St. Francis holds a dove in his left hand symbolizing his fervent desire to serve as an instrument of God’s peace, while a gentle lamb rests on his right arm manifesting his love for animals. The current pope was so inspired by St. Francis’ humility, holiness and love for the poor, that he became the first pope in history to take the name of Francis.
